Architecture of Armenian churches in Iran
Armenian churches in Iran draw upon 20 centuries of history and are geographically widespread throughout the country. Azerbaijan, Isfahan and Tehran have the most prominent churches in 4 main archetypes: monasteries, urban church, rural churches and chapels. They have their own unique architectural style in Iran, so unique that it can be called Iranian-Armenian Church Architecture. In Azerbaijan, this architecture uses local elements, while in Isfahan it is combined with whatever was the style of its construction and in Tehran they mostly follow contemporary styles while remaining deeply rooted in their own culture.
I’ve made several visits to these churches throughout Iran, and photographed these fascinating buildings. Here you can preview a handful of photos I’ve selected.
